The 2018 Endwar Biathlon was held on Saturday June 15th. Yes, this was not the standard date but we were accommodating the schedule of the birthday girl who had missed the event for the first time ever in 2017. And we finally got great weather for the whole day.
During the Biathlon we again avoided bees and broken bones despite a course that was more overgrown than usual. Marcos March was fastest overall while Nora was the fastest lady for the 8th time (nothing like home court advantage). The MOST AVERAGE and trophy winners were Karyn and David Kaplan who left their kids off the team so they were slower than previous years. Do what you have to do to win is what we say.
In other events Rowlf Higley proved that it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog and won the Dog Dash (let's also admit the other pooches were clueless this year). Mary DeBisschop umpired rather than competed in the BBall contest so the Lords Quinn and Trudy (our favorite t-shirt family) brought home the bacon. Mike Ward, a perennial champ, won the Ping-Pong tourney over the "always a bridesmaid" Rich Schafer. Steve and Laurie James triumphed at Cornhole. The band was again Natick's own Brother Kane and, again, we didn't even finish one keg and should be ashamed.
Frank and Belle Lad of Christchurch New Zealand were unable to attend this year but brother Tom Lad stepped up and led us in the pre-race Champions Song.
BUT MOST OF ALL THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HELPED THIS YEAR - GRILLERS, EVENT MANAGERS, ETC. AND THANKS TO THE GUESTS OF THIS YEAR AND YEARS' PAST WITHOUT WHOM THERE WOULD BE NO PARTY.
Note that we have fixed the previous Biathlon results and you can now check to see just how much slower you are now than you used to be. Also there is a facebook page where you are encouraged to post pictures that you took... here
And here's a great video from 2012... here
The Endwar Biathlon is the signature event at an annual summer party of the Driscoll-Seymours. The party usually takes place on the Saturday after the Fourth of July Weekend. It was first held in 1992 to celebrate the 1st birthday of Nora Endwar Seymour (born July 4th, 1991) and has been held every year since. At some point it stopped being Nora's birthday party and became, well, just a party. (But we still always have a birthday cake.)
The Biathlon is a run-bike-run (second run is optional) event that nobody should take seriously but some idiots always do (to see details and previous results click here). Registration for the Biathlon opens at 12:30pm and the event starts at 1:30pm. There are other events as well (go here). There are always kegs of good beer (usually one Jack's Abby Hoponius Union and one that is not an IPA), cheap wine, and burgers/hot dogs (served around 6pm). The band will start around 4pm. This is a pretty informal event - no, make that a very informal event - in which everyone pitches in to run the events, cook the food, etc. Don't bring a birthday present but do bring a bike, helmet, running shoes and a sense of humor!
