2018 ENDWAR BIATHLON WILL BE ON SATURDAY JUNE 16TH!! (YES, I KNOW THAT WE ARE BREAKING TRADITION BUT IF WE DO IT THEN NORA WILL BE ABLE TO COME)
The 2017 Endwar Biathlon was held on Saturday July 8th. Once again the weather was a little iffy - misting at the start of the Biathlon and then a brief heavy rain that drove the band into the barn and people into house or barn. But, as always, good spirits (and beer) prevailed. For the first time ever the Birthday Girl was not in attendance. Her absence and some other conflicts held attendance down to barely over 100. (This means that we still have some 25th Endwar Biathlon souvenir mugs left as a 2018 incentive.)
During the Biathlon we again avoided bees and broken bones. Scott Townsend was a first time attendee and was the fastest male. Kristin Smith was easily the fastest woman and - A FIRST FOR YOU LADIES!! - overall winner. The winner of the prized MOST AVERAGE trophy was controversial. Rich Schafer had "pre-run" the event the previous weekend (many precedents for this) and his inserted time was most average. Do you need to be in attendance to win? We decided you do not. Congratulations, Rich - we know that you have always aspired to be most average.
In other events Turbo finally figured out how to leverage home court advantage and won the Dog Dash. Mary DeBisschop rolled to her umpteenth Bball win. Regina Fritz finally won the Ping Pong Tournament after many years of trying. Chris Lindquist won the male side of the basketball contest (in a weak field). I think some combination of the Lord family won the Cornhole contest but it was raining heavily at that point and we were all drinking a lot. Let's just say they did because for the past two years their Holiday card showed the whole family wearing Endwar Biathlon shirts and you really have to reward that loyalty. The band was Natick's own Bees Deluxe and was great. We didn't even finish one keg and should be ashamed.
Frank and Belle Lad again won the "Longest Distance To Get Here" award by coming from Christchurch New Zealand.
BUT MOST OF ALL THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HELPED THIS YEAR - GRILLERS, EVENT MANAGERS, ETC. AND THANKS TO THE GUESTS OF THIS YEAR AND YEARS' PAST WITHOUT WHOM THERE WOULD BE NO PARTY.
Note that we have fixed the previous Biathlon results and you can now check to see just how much slower you are now than you used to be. Also there is a facebook page where you are encouraged to post pictures that you took... here
And here's a great video from 2012... here
The Endwar Biathlon is the signature event at an annual summer party of the Driscoll-Seymours. The party usually takes place on the Saturday after the Fourth of July Weekend. It was first held in 1992 to celebrate the 1st birthday of Nora Endwar Seymour (born July 4th, 1991) and has been held every year since. At some point it stopped being Nora's birthday party and became, well, just a party. (But we still always have a birthday cake.)
The Biathlon is a run-bike-run (second run is optional) event that nobody should take seriously but some idiots always do (to see details and previous results click here). Registration for the Biathlon opens at 12:30pm and the event starts at 1:30pm. There are other events as well (go here). There are always kegs of good beer (usually one Jack's Abby Hoponius Union and one that is not an IPA), cheap wine, and burgers/hot dogs (served around 6pm). The band will start around 4pm. This is a pretty informal event - no, make that a very informal event - in which everyone pitches in to run the events, cook the food, etc. Don't bring a birthday present but do bring a bike, helmet, running shoes and a sense of humor!
